The project was aimed at improving the quality of medical care in a rural area of Malawi by restoring the electric and water supplies of the Chitipa Hospital. The hospital is located in the north of the country and supports approximately 20.000 people.

Previously, the hospital was powered by a diesel engine, which for unknown reasons had disappeared from the hospital. The electric wiring was still in functional condition, however, due to the lack of a generator the hospital was without electricity. In this project, a solar powered system was installed to provide electricity for the hospital. Conditions at night were improved by the installation of batteries. Personnel was trained in proper usage and care of the system.

The water supplies of the hospital were in an unusable state as well. Water feeds were available, but because of dysfunctional settling tanks the water could not be used due to its poor quality. In this project the water system was restored by building a new water collection system, restoring the feed pipes over approximately 2 km, restoring the settling tanks and installing new filter systems. Personnel was trained in proper maintenance of the system.
